French combat plane manufacturer Dassault’s Rafale fighter has won the Indian MMRCA competiton beating the European consortum’s Eurofighter aircraft in a contest that went on for four years. Rafale executives were called by Indian MOD officials this morning and informed that their aircraft has been finally selected.

The Dassault Rafale (French pronunciation: [ʁafal]squall) is a French twin-engine delta-wing multi-role jet fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. It is called an “omnirole” fighter by its manufacturer.

In the late 1970s, the French Air Force and Navy were seeking replacements for its aircraft. To save development costs, France agreed with four other nations to produce an air dominance fighter, but subsequent disagreements led to a split. To satisfy stringent criteria formulated by the Ministry of Defense, Dassault built atechnology demonstrator to prove the viability of its new product. Further development led to the current Rafale variants, which embody innovative avionics and aerodynamics, optimised for air supremacy operations.

Introduced in 2000, the Rafale is being produced both for land-based use with the French Air Force and forcarrier-based operations with the French Navy. It has also been marketed for export to several countries, including selection by the Indian Air Force.Image

A coordinated global campaign is monitoring a wayward Russian Mars probe that’s slated to crash to Earth in the next few days, the European Space Agency has announced.

The doomed Phobos-Grunt spacecraft, which Russian officials estimate will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere between Saturday and Monday (Jan. 14-16), is now officially a target for the 12-member Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee, or IADC for short.

The determination that Phobos-Grunt is not a high-risk piece of space junk  is due to the relatively low dry mass of the errant spacecraft—just 2.5 tons. There is about 11 tons of toxic propellant onboard, adding up to the probe’s total mass of 13.5 tons.

According to ESA, studies by the Russian space agency (known as Roscosmos) and NASA indicate that Phobos-Grunt’s fuel tanks should burst high above the Earth, releasing a load of propellant that will subsequently dissipate.

The Indian government has initiated legal proceedings against a number of search, social networking, and technology companies. The government found sufficient cause to pursue prosecution of the companies for refusing to regulate offensive content. Ten of the 21 companies are based outside India. These include Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, and YouTube. The companies are required to present themselves to the court at a hearing on March 13th.

The government of India made worldwide news early last month when it was revealed that Kapil Sibal, India’s minister of telecommunications, was planning to meet with representatives from several tech and social media companies in order to request that they pre-screen and censor “offensive” content from their sites. Facebook and Google, which were among the companies asked to censor their content, responded that they would enforce their terms of service and abide by the law, but no more. Meanwhile, in response to the storm of criticism generated around the world by news of his office’s meetings, Sibal denied that his office had requested censorship of political content. He insisted that the only content he wanted removed was that which would be offensive to the religious sensibilities of the Indian people.

Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor

The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation supermaneuverable fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attackelectronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.[5] Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22. Program partner Boeing Defense, Space & Security provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.

The aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 during the years prior to formally entering USAF service in December 2005 as the F-22A. Despite a protracted and costly development period, the United States Air Force considers the F-22 a critical component of US tactical air power, and claims that the aircraft is unmatched by any known or projected fighter,[6] while Lockheed Martin claims that the Raptor’s combination of stealth, speed, agility, precision and situational awareness, combined with air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities, makes it the best overall fighter in the world today.[7] Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, former Chief of the Australian Defence Force, said in 2004 that the “F-22 will be the most outstanding fighter plane ever built.”[8]

The high cost of the aircraft, a lack of clear air-to-air combat missions because of delays in the Russian and Chinese fifth-generation fighter programs,[9] a US ban on Raptor exports, and the ongoing development of the planned cheaper and more versatile F-35 resulted in calls to end F-22 production.[N 1] In April 2009 the US Department of Defense proposed to cease placing new orders, subject to Congressional approval, for a final procurement tally of 187 Raptors.[11] The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 lacked funding for further F-22 production.

The F-22 Raptor is a fifth generation fighter that is considered a fourth-generation stealth aircraft by the USAF.[115] Its dual afterburning Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 turbofans incorporate pitch axis thrust vectoring, with a range of ±20 degrees. The maximum thrust is classified, though most sources place it at about 35,000 lbf (156 kN) per engine.[116] Maximum speed, without external weapons, is estimated to be Mach 1.82 in supercruise mode,[117] as demonstrated by General John P. Jumper, former US Air Force Chief of Staff, when his Raptor exceeded Mach 1.7 without afterburners on 13 January 2005.[118] With afterburners, it is “greater than Mach 2.0” (1,317 mph, 2,120 km/h). Former Lockheed F-22 chief test pilot Paul Metz stated that the Raptor has a fixed inlet; the absence of variable intake ramps typically limits speeds to approximately Mach 2.0. Metz has also stated that the F-22 has a greater climb rate than the F-15 Eagle due to advances in engine technology, despite the F-15’s thrust-to-weight ratio of about 1.2:1 (the F-22 has a ratio closer to 1:1).[119] The US Air Force claims that the Raptor cannot be matched by any known or projected fighter types,[6] and Lockheed Martin claims: “the F-22 is the only aircraft that blends supercruise speed, super-agility, stealth and sensor fusion into a single air dominance platform.”[120]

The ability of airframes to withstand both stress and heat is a major design factor, thus the F-22 makes use of many polymers; however, as some of the materials are a significant health risk to personnel, technicians require protective equipment such as eye protection, respirators and gloves to work upon the aircraft.[121] The use of internal weapons bays allows the aircraft to maintain a comparatively higher performance while carrying a heavy payload over many other aircraft due to a lack of drag from external stores. It is one of only a few of aircraft that can supercruise, sustained supersonic flight without the use of afterburners, lowering fuel usage. The F-22 can intercept time-critical or rapidly moving targets that a subsonic aircraft would not have the speed to follow and an afterburner-dependent aircraft would lack fuel to reach.[122]

The F-22 is highly maneuverable, at both supersonic and subsonic speeds. It is extremely departure-resistant,[123] enabling it to remain controllable at extreme pilot inputs. The Raptor’s thrust vectoring nozzles allow the aircraft to turn tightly, and perform extremely high alpha (angle of attack) maneuvers such as the Herbst maneuver (or J-turn), Pugachev’s Cobra,[119] and the Kulbit.[119] The F-22 is also capable of maintaining a constant angle of attack of over 60°, yet still having some control of roll.[119][124] During June 2006 exercises in Alaska, F-22 pilots demonstrated that cruise altitude has a significant effect on combat performance, and routinely attributed their altitude advantage as a major factor in achieving an unblemished kill ratio against other US fighters and 4th/4.5th generation fighters.[125]

The F-22’s ground attack capabilities are minimal. It has no forward looking infraredLaser designator or laser spot tracker and it cannot carry an external pod to provide these capabilities. Its ability to locate ground targets with radar is still under development and it can only carry a very modest bomb and fuel load in a stealthy configuration.[citation needed]

NEW DELHI: A member of the West Indies team management at the Ferozeshah Kotla seemed bemused by the complete lack of buzz leading up to Sunday’s first Test.

Cricket on these shores is supposed to be chaotic frenzy, at worst. Or passionate celebration at best. The eerie silence and missing mobs which greeted both teams here on Friday seemed odd and out of place.

The official was informed that deserted stadiums greeted England in the recent one-day series. That the hosts had been playing non-stop since the World Cup win. That the nation had been in pregnant pause for nearly eight months, waiting for a significant individual cricketing milestone.

He took it all in and whispered, “All hell will break loose if he does it here, won’t it?”

For once, the game is hoping it will. Sachin Tendulkar has gone without a century since March 12, and the gap between the 99th ton, and the anticipated 100th, has now encompassed a World Cup win, a haze of matches and tours, a disastrous England campaign, a Tendulkar injury and eventually, waning public interest.

For cricket’s falling TRP graph, as usual there’s no one to turn to for an upswing but Sachin. This series against the West Indies is merely the means to an end.

For Tendulkar, this is just another chapter in a continuing story. The face gives away nothing. At the team’s nets session, he seemed happily ensconced in his favourite bubble of concentration, emerging occasionally to joke around with teammates, have an animated chat with coach Duncan Fletcher, obsess around with his back foot and bat swing, and even give the team’s young spinners a whacking or two.

Today is not a good day for my Delhi.
Two incidents has just shaked the whole city.The first was the bomb blast near near high court at gate no..5 which killed 11 peoples and lot of were injured and the second was an earthquake which just shake the whole city.The city trembles and all the people were on road.My whole hostel got empty just in a min.A very trembling day!!!!!!

CHESTER-LE-STREET: India were left feeling hard done by after heavy rain led to the first one-day International against England being abandoned here on Saturday following the first commanding performance by the visitors on this tour. After a 4-0 drubbing in the Test series and defeat in the lone T20 International, the Indians had their tails up after putting 274 on the board on being asked to bat by England.

In reply, England were 27 for two in 7.2 overs when rain first stopped play. Match officials first announced that the home team would be given a revised target of 224 from 32 overs and at this stage, England needed 197 from 23.4 overs. But it started drizzling again and the target was further revised, with England being asked to make 164 runs from 20 overs, which meant scoring 137 from the remaining 12.4 overs.

India would have fancied their chances in such a scenario but no sooner was the announcement made, it started raining again and the match was abandoned.

India’s charge with the bat was led by opener Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli, both scoring impressed half-centuries and Parthiv missing out on a well-deserved ton by just five runs. The team ran out of steam a bit at the end of their innings but Suresh Raina and skipper Dhoni did enough to ensure that the team reached 274/7 at the end of their 50 overs.

Parthiv Patel was quite tense when the team management informed him on Friday night that he would be opening the innings, but his fears turned out to be unfounded. Considering the fact that there was no Sachin Tendulkar in the lineup, the pressure was immense on the all-new opening pair of Parthiv (95) and Ajinkya Rahane (40 off 44 balls). They stuck to the task, managing the highest opening stand (of 82) in 10 innings on the current England tour across all formats, and the first impressive one since the Lord’s Test in July.

Then Virat Kohli joined Parthiv, the pair adding another 103 off 117 balls. With Parthiv’s dismissal – after having faced 107 balls and struck 12 fours – India lost the momentum. Both Parthiv and Kohli fell to soft dismissals, Parthiv being caught-behind off James Anderson to a delivery that just moved enough from the left-hander and Kohli (55; 73 balls, 4×4) gifting his wicket to Samit Patel. Lower down, Suresh Raina (38 off 29) steadied the ship with some trademark shots, being well supported by MS Dhoni (33 off 36), though the Indian innings lacked punch towards the end.

England won the toss and elected to field in overcast conditions. India started off cautiously, with the England pace attack hardly offering any room. Both Parthiv and Rahane curbed their natural instincts and paced their innings well. Parthiv was fortunate when he was dropped when on 7 by local debutant Ben Stokes off Tim Bresnan, but thereafter, the batsmen took control, even hooking and pulling the shorter ones on a pitch where the ball seemed to sit up.

Dravid was given out in controversial fashion, while Rohit Sharma had to leave the field after being struck on the finger by Broad. Anderson was the pick of the English bowlers, though Broad bagged two and Bresnan got going in the last over with two dismissals.

The teams now head to the Rose Bowl in Southampton for the second ODI on Tuesday.
